One of my first assignments for University was to design a kitchen for a family that lived in a house in London. The family had recently built on an extension to back of the house and they wanted it to be a large open plan room. The family also have a dog.
The essentials the client wanted in their kitchen was for it to be modern, have 2 dishwashers, a sink, an oven, a steam oven, a warming drawer, a waste disposal, a pantry, somewhere to sit and eat with guests (they likd to entertain a lot) where they can look out in to their beautiful garden, a high-tech electric sensory hob and an extractor fan.
I visited a lot of different kitchen show rooms in Winchester, to name a few Winchester Kitchens, John Lewis of Hungerfords, Harvey Jones, Searle & Taylor, and Bulthaup.
I decided to do hand drawn 3D Perspective views of my kitchen design, and rendered them with Watercolour paint and chalk pastels. I chose to use the Linear Style cabinetry from Harvey Jones, and had the island painted in Atomic Red by Little Greene, and the other cabinets painted in Inox Grey and the walls painted in Shallows Grey also from Little Greene. I chose red to add a pop of colour and warmth to the room, so that it wasn’t too dull and cold with the grey walls and cabinets.
The floor tiles are Polished Granite Galaxy Tiles from Topps Tiles, and the counter tops are Statuario Venato Marble from Landford Stone. I I designed the island to have the hob on the opposite side of the large glass sliding doors, this way when they cook, they can look out on to the garden. I raised the bar counter by the stools so that when they are entertaining, water won’t get splashed on to their guests and their guests won’t be able to see what they are doing (although they’ll know they’re cleaning the dishes), this also provides a breakfast area for the children to eat at in the mornings before they go to school, and means they can still look out on to the garden.
I designed a space in the island for a dog bed to go for their dog. I created a stack for the ovens and warming drawer, so that everything was in one place. I converted and designed the open room behind the kitchen in to a large pantry and utility room. I designed a dining area near the other large sliding doors as well, so that guests and the family can enjoy meals and the view at the same time.
At the entrance of the room I created a comfortable seating area, with an area rug, a tv, unit and coffee table, so that the family can relax. Leading on from that area is a small room, which I converted in to the play area for the children.
All appliances are from Gaggenau, Quooker Taps, Franke and John Lewis.
